If you’re anything like me then the concept of clean beauty is one that excites, overwhelms, and intimidates all at once. Cue the crisis – what counts as “clean”? (Here you’ll find my laboriously researched take on the matter.) In this post we’ll look at three clean, sustainable, vegan beauty brands that are perfect thing for giving the old beauty routine a refresh to be fresh.
The quest for the best
Beyond just being clean, any brands that appear on Florah must also be vegan, cruelty-free, sustainable, and ethical. Quite the feel-good but daunting laundry list.
So I took to the internet to unearth some beauty brands that check all those boxes. And I’m here to share the spoils of my search: three carefully vetted brands with all those lovely attributes PLUS the added bonus of being highly-reviewed and, by all accounts, very effective. So we may have our cake and eat it too.
Three Ships
This up-and-coming natural skincare brand is such a find.
Not only are their products effective (from everything I read), beloved, and made from 100% plant and mineral-derived ingredients, but within the realm of *actually* clean beauty they’re very affordable. You can get a toner for $17, a cleanser for $20, and a night cream for $35.
You can shop Three Ships’ store by product type, skin type, or skin concern like dull skin, fine lines, or pores. One of the coolest things about Three Ships is their Ingredient Glossary, which definitely bolsters the company’s claims around transparency and traceability. The glossary tells you what each ingredient in their products does, how they source it, and its sustainability story.
A little tidbit that I love: on their products page they have before and after skin photos, and the overlay text says “beautiful before” and “beautiful after.” Please and thank you.
OSEA
For those who are devotees of the sea and marvel at her healing power, here’s a clean beauty brand just for you. OSEA harnesses the superfood power of seaweed – which is rich in vitamins, minerals, and nutrients – in their sublime skincare products.
OSEA’s line is free from artificial colors, dyes, and synthetic ingredients. And beyond that, a spin through any product’s ingredient list reveals plant-derived goodness that you can pronounce. The dream. You can shop by product type or benefits like anti-aging, eye care, and hydration.
And on top of it all, OSEA is Climate Neutral Certified and gives back to various different charities, including MissionBlue, SeaTrees, A Sense of Home, and Kiss the Ground.
I first discovered OSEA after receiving their Ocean Cleanser – which is divine – in a Petit Vour subscription box (which is also divine and I highly recommend). But I rediscovered OSEA as I started building out the clean beauty section of Florah and was excited that I had. It’s a keeper for sure.
Mad Hippie
Aptly-named, Mad Hippie is the flower child of natural skincare. (Not sure what that means but I like it?) And although it’s new to Florah, Mad Hippie is not new to me – I use their Cream Cleanser, Hydrating Nutrient Mist, and Eye Cream and highly recommend all three.
Mad Hippie’s products are full of botanical ingredients and free of parabens, petrochemicals, phthalates, SLS, synthetic dyes, perfumes, OEGs and silicone. And they donate a dollar from every online sale to conservation.
Mad Hippie’s reviews speak for themselves, and they’ve gotten quite some accolades – with products described as “MAGIC” by marie claire, “a miracle worker” by allure, and listed among the Best anti-aging products dermatologists swear by by Women’s Health.
They also have a lovely broad-spectrum, reef-safe, very highly-reviewed sunscreen line, which is sometimes hard to find in the clean beauty space.
And side note: their packaging is just as pretty as can be and is lovely to look at sitting on the vanity. All around a solid addition to any and every clean, vegan skincare routine.
