After years of trying shampoos and conditioners that left my hair feeling somehow both greasy and dry, I decided to splurge a little and pick up one of the nicer brands in the grocery aisle: ecoLove. And ‘twas love at first wash.

Sad and Flat: A Memoir for My Hair

My hair is about three feet long and quite unflattering, so improvements in the hair department have been on my to-do list for many months now. I love having it long, but the weight of so much hair means it lies flat around my face, which does not work on someone as asymmetrical as I.

Desperate need for a haircut aside, my hair also just seems off balance. It gets dirty faster than it used to and the ends are brittle. Which, as with any ailment of body or mind, I always wonder… hormones, sleep, diet, age, stress? And then I jump ship on that train of thought, too overwhelmed to explore any of those possibilities in more depth. Anyhoo!

A Long-Awaited Revival, Courtesy of ecoLove

Since I started using ecoLove, my hair feels better than it has in a long time. Beginning with the actual wash, there’s no feeling of dryness or coarseness as I rinse the shampoo or conditioner out – which is a common complaint I have with other brands. Then post-shower, when I use my dry brush, my hair feels smooth and full and happy.

Look at those happy hairs

Disclaimer! The sticking point based on others’ reviews of ecoLove products is the strong fragrance. It’s polarizing: some people find it overpowering and off-putting, while others revel in it. I fall into the latter group, and find the smell a heavenly, deep floral which I’m happy lingers after the wash. But if you’re not one for smelly smells in your beauty products then this is probably not the line for you.

Details on the Brand and Label

Since discovering and loving the effects of the products so much, I’ve done some additional research on the brand. A few highlights are as follows:

  • Vegan and cruelty-free, of course
  • Minimum 95% ingredients from natural sources
  • Minimum 30% ingredients from organic sources
  • Some lines (purple and orange) are made with dead sea minerals

Is their line the cleanest of the cleanest? It’s not, but it’s pretty darn clean.

I did have a couple specific questions about ingredients on the label, so I reached out via their general email and who but their CEO Sharona should answer! It turns out she’s the CEO of OrganicZone, the parent company to 10+ amazing organic/natural brands including ecoLove. What a powerhouse.

I first inquired about the “Fragrance” on the label because it’s relatively high up on the list of ingredients. Sharona said that the fragrance is one of the ingredients not from natural sources, but noted that it’s high quality and allergen free. She also said, “All Fragrances used in ecoLove products meet the IFRA regulation and do not contain any allergenic or carcinogenic materials, phthalates and alcohol.” I myself was satisfied with that answer.

I also asked about phenoxyethanol, which appears on ecoLove’s label. It’s a slightly controversial ingredient that by EU beauty product standards (which are laughably more robust than US standards) should constitute less than 1% of the product. Sharona confirmed that EcoLove products meet that standard of less than 1%.

Why yes, I did reply back to thank her for the information and to fan-girl about what a badass she is and how I always have If You Care parchment paper in my kitchen (made by another brand under the OrganicZone parent company.) She played it so cool in response that it sent me into an existential spiral of questions about my communications skills, lol. Life’s exhausting sometimes, isn’t it?

Feel the Rainbow: A Colorful Line for Every Hair Type

ecoLove has different lines based on your hair type, and each line uses different hero ingredients to answer the needs of that specific hair type. They’re also color-coded, which I dig.

  • Purple: For colored & very dry hair. Made with organic blueberry, grape, and lavender extracts. (I’m using the purple for my hair, which is both colored and very dry indeed.)
  • Green: For all hair types. Made with organic cucumber, parsley, and spinach extracts.
  • Orange: For normal to dry hair. Made with organic carrot, pumpkin, and sweet potato extracts.
  • Red: Normal to oily hair. Made with organic tomato, beetroot, and red pepper extracts.

The ecoLove Ethics Breakdown

  • Vegan & cruelty-free: YES
  • Made with sustainable ingredients: YES
  • Ethical production: Not clear from their site; more research needed
