Is there anything quite so versatile as a cute, comfy t shirt? Pair it with trousers for a polished look or cozy pants for relaxing, and you can go seamlessly from home to errands to date night with just a quick change of bottoms and accessories. The ease and breeze of it all. Add earth-friendly materials to the mix, and you’ve got yourself highly wearable, sustainable t shirts you’ll feel good reaching for all the time.

Fast fashion is all around us, and the idea of switching to slower, greener options sometimes seems daunting. So starting with sustainable basics can feel like a high-impact but still bite-size step. You may only reach for that organic party dress once in a while, but organic t shirts are sure to get a lot of feel-good mileage.

This post features 7 brands that offer ethical t shirts with various different perks. The majority use 100% organic cotton for their shirts because it’s a soft, breathable option that’s easier on the earth than non-organic cotton. All the brands in this post score a “good” or “great’ rating on Good On You, which is an amazing site that rates fashion brands on their *actual* ethics and sustainability. Fully vegan brands are marked with a (V).

This post is organized by approximate price, beginning with lowest price per t shirt and ending with highest. Without further ado, let’s see these cutie-tootie eco friendly t shirts.

Best Sustainable T Shirts for Women

1. Yes Friends (V)

Amazingly affordable organic cotton t-shirts

Yes Friends is one of those shining brands that’s just a JOY to discover. What’s to love about them? Kind of everything, but the headline is that they’re a seriously ethical brand that still manages to offer organic cotton t shirts starting at $15. Yes, friends, $15. (If you’re used to conventional brands, this might sound less than groundbreaking. But that price range is almost unheard of within sustainable fashion, considering what you get in sustainability, ethics, and quality relative to your average brand.)

So, what exactly are you getting? Highly reviewed t shirts from a brand that pays their garment workers fairly and lets you tip those workers directly. They also use Fairtrade and organic cotton, recycle 100% of the water at their primary factory in India, use solar energy, ship their products in biodegradable bags, and are fully vegan. Run, don’t walk.

2. Lezat

Super-soft organic t shirts made in Los Angeles

Lezat is a female-founded brand that makes their clothes in Los Angeles. They offer sustainable t shirts in pastels, pinks, and neutrals, in both classic cuts and crop tops. Lezat’s collection of tees isn’t huge, but they gained their spot on this list because of their competitive pricing. Beyond organic cotton t shirts, they have super cute and sustainable dresses, jumpsuits, and activewear.

Lezat produces out of their own factory in downtown LA, where they pay their craftspeople fair wages. They use sustainable materials for their clothing and shipping, and they use the scraps from their clothing production to make dog beds for their local LA animal shelter! To date they’ve donated 1,600 dog beds. They’re also B Corp Pending.

3. Rapanui (V)

Sustainable t shirts in nature prints (or customized!)

If you love beach vibes and nature prints, Rapanui has some lovely options. Like this gorgeous t shirt that’s a collab between Rapanui and BBC Earth. They’ve also got a nice selection of more standard t shirts in basic cuts and colors, plus they offer personalized products so you can put whatever design your heart desires onto organic cotton t shirts using non toxic inks. Their products are built to last and are all very highly reviewed.

If you’ve got a moment, check out Rapanui’s story. It’s a beautiful founding tale about growing up on the Isle of Wight (I’ll spare you the Google search I just did: it’s an island off the south coast of England) and the unique perspective that upbringing offers. Among other sustainable initiatives, Rapanui uses renewable energy in their factory and lets you send back your old Rapanui products to be recycled or remade into new products, and they give you store credit when you do.

4. Threads 4 Thought

Sustainable t shirts in a nice range of styles and colors

Threads 4 Thought is perfect if you’re looking for a little flair in your t shirt style or color. They’ve got v-necks, crew-necks, henleys, crop tops and, depending on the style, up to 13 different colors to choose, from size XS to XXL. They also make different styles in different materials: recycled polyester and spandex for stretch and flattering feel in their Guadalupe collection, recycled polyester, organic cotton, and rayon for a super soft feel in their Shelbie collection, and lenzing modal and spandex for stretch and softness in their Akia collection (among others).

T4T launched in 2006 to sell soft, sustainable basics, and they’ve since gone on to offer all sorts of apparel, including sweaters, sweatshirts, jackets, jeans, skirts, dressers, rompers, activewear, and sleepwear. They’re a one stop shop for eco-friendly basics. And among sustainable brands, they’re on the more mainstream side – you can find them at Nordstrom.

5. Happy Earth (V)

Soft organic cotton tees in earth-inspired designs

Happy Earth lives up to its name: the brand is Certified Climate Neutral, a B Corp, and part of 1% for the Planet. We love to see that! Happy Earth’s designs are fun, elevated, and nature-inspired, and their t shirts are all-gender fit. They also offer loungewear, activewear, and dresses, and reviews for their products are overwhelmingly positive; softness, comfort, and quality come up over and over again.

Happy Earth uses primarily organic cotton for their clothes, and they note that they never use polyester (recycled or otherwise) because it’s the main contributor to microfiber pollution. Over 95% of their products are made in Fair Trade certified factories, and at checkout for each purchase you can choose which of three causes to support, at no cost to you: plant 5 trees, prevent 150 lbs GHG Emissions, or remove 1 pound of ocean trash. How COOL.

6. DEDICATED

Fairtrade and organic cotton t shirts in uniquely beautiful designs

DEDICATED is where sustainable clothing meets unique, compliment-worthy patterns and designs. In my Reddit browsing I’ve sometimes seen complaints from people who feel like sustainable clothing = boring design. DEDICATED is certainly the opposite end of that spectrum. No matter your style and interests, they likely have a patterned fabric to surprise and delight you. Bicycles? Yes. Abstract beach scenes? Yes. Kitten with a laser beam? Also yes.

DEDICATED also does super cool collaborations with artists and organizations to create meaningful and distinct collections. Beyond aesthetics, DEDICATED is a highly ethical brand. In fact, the sustainability and ethics section of their site is so long and robust that it would be hard to sum up here, but suffice it to say it’s impressive and worth a peruse if you have time.

Price Per Tee: $49 – $69
Materials: Organic and Fairtrade Cotton

7. The Classic T-shirt Company

Premium, LA-made organic cotton t-shirts

The Classic T-shirt Company (TCTC, for short) makes premium organic cotton t shirts with a high thread count and color retention for up to 100 washes. A spin through their reviews shows that they meet the high quality standards they set for themselves, as reviewers absolutely love these ethical t shirts.

TCTC makes their products in Los Angeles, and pays their workers a living wage. I love what they say on their site about their packaging: “Our policy is plastic-free shipping, maybe that can inspire California lawmakers to do more for our planet too.” Love a little spicy environmentalism, woot! On that topic, TCTC donates 1% of their profits to charities, including Water for People, Armenia Tree Project, and the Ocean Cleanup.

Price Per Tee: $70 – $150
Materials: Organic Cotton
Based: Los Angeles, LA
Shipping within US: About $9 (free on orders $150+)
